Anathem

On the planet Arbre, intellectuals and scientists live in cloistered monastic enclaves to protect knowledge from a chaotic outside world. When an alien spacecraft is discovered orbiting the planet, a young scholar named Fraa Erasmas is thrust into a global crisis that challenges the foundations of his society.
