Key findings
  1. 01

The single most recommended book among the world's most influential people is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl — a memoir about meaning, not a business manual.

  2. 02

Every one of the 4,251 recommendations in this study is tied to a named person and a citable public source — no algorithms, no aggregate ratings.

  3. 03

75% of recommendations come with a verbatim quote explaining why the reader endorsed the book.

  4. 04

Psychology & Behavior is the most recommended category overall, accounting for 15.9% of all recommendations — outpacing business and self-improvement combined.

  5. 05

Across 218 founders, investors, authors, and public figures, the same 25 titles surface again and again — a canon that transcends any single field.

Methodology

EliteReads maintains a curated database of book recommendations made publicly by notable people — founders, investors, authors, scientists, athletes, and public figures. Recommendations are drawn from interviews, podcasts, published reading lists, essays, and social media.

Every recommendation in this study links to a primary source: the specific interview, post, or list where the reader named the book. 75% include a verbatim quote. We count a book once per person, so the ranking reflects how many distinct people recommend a title, not how often it is mentioned.

This snapshot reflects the database as of July 5, 2026: 4,251 recommendations across 2,918 distinct books from 218 people. The study is refreshed annually.
