While studying Spanish in San Miguel, Mexico, a young Indian woman named Bonita is approached by a stranger who claims to have known her mother as a traveling artist. Despite remembering her mother as a reserved woman who never left India, Bonita embarks on a journey across Mexico to reconcile these conflicting identities. The novella examines the fluid nature of memory and the historical parallels between the Partition of India and the Mexican Revolution.
